Calves are fed twice daily on good quality milk replacement powder. The day to day feeding is undertook by our dedicated calf rearer.​


Target weaning age is two months, however, accurate feeding history of the pens allows this to be flexible towards the animals performance.


Before weaning, the calf is once again weighed. Upon weaning, calves are removed from the rearing shed and batched up with similar size and age animals in one of our nearby post-weaning barns. 


Here they receive a farm-mixed blend of barley, soya and rapemeal alongside an ad-lib supply of good quality barley straw. 


Weights and daily gains are monitored in these barns until calves are ready to be sold at around the five month age.

All new arrivals are weighed and given a full course of Rispoval as a vaccination against respiratory disease.

We find rearing calves, to weaning, in such small groups allows for far better observation and insight into the animals health and condition. This system also allows us to provide specific feed and observe consumption so calves are weaned at the optimal time.


Furthermore, rearing in pens of three has reduced the risk of cross-contamination and limits the spread of diarrheal diseases such as Rotavirus and Coccidia. Additionally we have also seen a reduction in cross-suckling behaviour post weaning. All this can be achieved, alongside reasonable weight gains, with no effect on future performance.

Located on the Wiltshire/Dorset border, near the market town of Shaftesbury, Dengrove Farm specialise in the rearing of quality dairy cross calves.

All calves are sourced by our local and trusted calf specialist who understands the animals and the quality we require.

On arrival each calf is given a fully clean and disinfected pen in our dedicated rearing shed. Calves are batched together to form groups of three with similar age and size cattle. The ventilation in this barn is controlled by means of three fans that keep airflow constant.
